Dag Hammarskjölds Backåkra
73 Backåkravägen Löderup
Dag Hammarskjold's Backåkra is a notable site located in the southern Swedish region of Osterlen, dedicated to the memory of Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations. Hammarskjold, who served from 1953 until his fatal plane crash in 1961, purchased the old farmhouse Backåkra during the 1950s as a retreat.
Dag Hammarskjold acquired Backåkra as a personal retreat away from his often hectic professional life. Although he never lived there permanently, he treasured the tranquility and beauty of the southern Swedish landscape. Following his death, the estate was converted into a memorial site and a museum, which is currently managed by the Swedish Academy. The house and its surroundings preserve many of Hammarskjold's personal items and mementos, including books, works of art, and furniture. Visitors can tour the authentically preserved rooms and learn more about the life and work of this significant diplomat.
